New Baltimore, MI is a city in Macomb County in the state of Michigan. It was incorporated into a village in 1867 and became a city in 1931. The city is located on the shores of Lake St. Clair and has a public park, beach and a downtown shopping district. New Baltimore was originally inhabited by Native Americans, but German explorer Pierre Yax became the first non-Native American to inhabit the area in 1763. Pierre was the son of Johan Michael Jacks who was the first non-Native American to inhabit the state of Michigan. In 1763 Pierre was in the Grosse Pointe area, but in 1796 he arrived in New Baltimore and received a land grant from President John Quincy Adams in July of 1826. The land was originally his by way of a land patent that Yax had in 1812, when Michigan was still part of the Michigan Territory. Later the French would inhabit the area and built farms along the lakes and rivers. The waterfront farms had narrow footprints so they had access to the water, but ran deep away from the water. Usually the depth of the farm would be determined by how far a man could work his land in the course of one day.

In 1845 the first evidence of a settlement came when a Mount Clemens businessman by the name of Alfred Ashley plotted 64 acres of land on both sides of what is now known as Washington St. This would later become known as the town of Ashley and in 1851 there was a post office built called Ashleyville and Alfred Ashley was the postmaster.  Along with the post office, Ashley also had shipping, real estate and lumber businesses. The city of Ashley sat about exactly where the city of New Baltimore’s downtown district sits today.  The original city was laid out in a typical gridiron fashion that was used to map out most of the towns in America. Unfortunately this did cause problems because of the influx of French settlers and the change of use for the land. This created problems with subdivision layouts and waterfront access that still exist today. Until 1867 the city was called Ashley and then became known as New Baltimore.

New Baltimore has always taken advantage of its waterfront property and early on became an exporter of agricultural and manufacturing products to other areas. The area was known for making barrels, brooms, bricks, coffins and creamery products. The area was also a big supplier of lumber related products and shipped lumbar from the mills by boat to the surrounding areas. The area’s development was tied directly to the water and as a result, there were piers everywhere in the city extending far out into the lakes and rivers.

Over the years a lot of things have changed in New Baltimore and one of the main things was the invention of the automobile. With the auto came major changes to the world we live in. Not only has our major mode of personal transportation changed, but the way we shipped things changed too. This meant that New Baltimore would now become a vacation destination and not a manufacturing area. The area would now become a getaway destination for people who lived in Detroit and would have an opera house, hotels, salt baths, summer and winter recreational activities, saloons and a brewery along with numerous resort and commercial businesses. The city was also in a direct path of a locomotive track that ran from Detroit to Port Huron daily. At one point the city even had an electrical plant to run inter-urban passenger trains, which continued until the 1920’s. Today the city has a population of roughly 12,000 people and has a busy downtown area with lots of shops, restaurants, a movie theatre and numerous other places to go and things to do. Today New Baltimore is a city of about 12,800 people and it lies in the Anchor Bay School District. We lie a short distance from Detroit and Mount Clemens to the north and a short distance from Port Huron to the south. Some of our most popular parks are Maynard “Red” Aurand Memorial Park, Ruedisale Point Park and Walter and Mary Burke Park. Maynard Aurand Memorial Park has two baseball diamonds and an 80 by 200 foot skate park that is turned into an outdoor ice rink in the winter along with a sledding hill. The park also has basketball courts, a large playscape and swing sets along with a soccer field. Ruedisale Point Park has plenty of parking and picnic tables along with seasonal restrooms and is a pet friendly park. All leashed pets are welcome at this park. Finally we have Walter and Mary Burke Park. This park has a 190 foot dock extending into the lake and a boardwalk with beaches to view Anchor Bay. There are designated fishing areas along with picnic facilities, playscapes and a swimming area with benches. There are no pets allowed at Walter and Mary Burke Park, but if you are looking for a pet friendly park then there are plenty of those in the area to choose from also.
