Chesterfield Township originated as a general law township in 1842 and was officially a charter township in 1989. Chesterfield was first settled in 1830 and began to build business' in the area after 1865 when the Grand Trunk Railroad came through. As of the 2010 Census, Chesterfield had a population of 43,381 people. The township has a total area of 30.7 square miles of which roughly 9% is water.
